Managing negative feedback

What happens when you receive ‘bad’ feedback? Should you just give up and never do it again? Does this mean you are bad at your job? Should you just quit now?

No!

This is an opportunity to learn and grow with your training and personal skills.

This is not a personal attack.

Tips to turn negative feedback into a positive

-          Accept it- don’t justify your actions

-          Understand the specifics - separate behaviour from you; focus on the specific actions

-          Reflect- consider how this aligns with your goals and your own experience

-          Develop action plan for improvement – set SMART goals, seek support

-          Celebrate your successes as you work towards making improvements

By completing a personal debrief following each training session, you will increase your self-awareness as a trainer. This is a great opportunity to identify development points yourself and continually improve your practice.

This can be as simple as ‘what I did well’ ‘what I can improve on’.
